Product Description
19TH Century Irish Penal crucifix. This special cross depicts symbols of the Resurrection: the Risen Lord and the Apostles below him.
Near the end of the seventeenth Century very harsh laws were introduced against Catholics in Ireland which were designed to ensure that Catholics remained poor, ignorant and without spiritual guidance. These were known as the Penal laws. Out of necessity, the Penal cross was designed to be hidden on one's body. The image of Christ was very often the only symbols of hope.
This beautifully handcrafted crucifix is bronzed and hand finished. Ready to hang on your wall. 9'' tall. A Paul Nixon creation.
